"The Last Dance" and Its Implications on the Sneaker Game
Each Sunday from April 19th to May 17th, ESPN will debut 2 new episodes of “The Last Dance,” a docuseries centered around the 1997-1998 Bulls and the road that lead them to that point. To kick off the series, Jordan teamed up with SNKRS for a shock drop of the Fire Red Jordan 5 (Silver Tongue), and they sold out instantly. That pair wasn’t marked for release until May 2nd at a price point of $220. This early release was widely expected, as it makes sense for Nike to use a shock drop to build hype and anticipation of its shoes, alongside the sports’ docuseries of the year.
Now to the broader sneaker game. We’ve seen in recent years as hype grows around an individual, like Travis Scott, their style and influence spreads to the broader community, with SB Dunks as an example. It’s very possible that the rise of this docuseries will bring alongside it a rise of Retro Jordans, and a rise in resell price for models such as the 1, 4, 5, 11 and so on. We should expect to see a higher level of hype for color ways that MJ rocked, or mirror certain color pallets such as Breds, or Concords. It’s unclear if this will come true however, as this was simply and early release, which always sells out. Take a look at the Jordan 4 FIBA (2019). Early access came and went in a heartbeat, but months later the shoe is nearly $100 under retail. Only time will tell if the sneaker hype will follow alongside the success of the series, but if you’re a fan, I recommend grabbing a pair now, before it’s too late.
